If you’re a driver, you know that there’s always a chance when you get behind the wheel that you can be in an accident. Insurance surveys show that 77% of drivers will experience an accident. While most accidents are minor, it is important that you are prepared. Here’s a list from your friends at Chevy of Wooster of things you should do to prepare yourself.

  • Keep an accident report form in your car, along with other important documents such as your insurance and registration info. With this form, you can collect vital accident information.
  • Remember – rule 1 of any accident is to stay calm. Even minor accidents can be overwhelming.
  • Check for other vehicles/traffic before exiting your car – be sure the area around you is safe. Call the police and determine whether or not you need an ambulance.
  • Gather your license, insurance information and registration.
  • If it is safe to do so, clear the roadway by moving involved vehicles to a safe area. Take some photographs of any damage to your/other vehicles.
  • Do not admit fault, argue, or discuss the accident with others at the scene. Using your phone, record any and all damage to involved properties.
  • Record pertinent information, including names, numbers, license plates and any other important info from those involved in the accident as well as any witnesses.
  • Exchange insurance info with other parties involved in the traffic collision. You can ask any attending police about receiving and accident report.
  • The process of getting your vehicle back on the road is now underway.
